If you are like most parents, when your teen’s grades starts to slip, or they are struggling to pull their grades back up, you may look into getting a tutor.
And if you have already looked into getting a tutor for your teen, then you know that getting a tutor can be a little pricey!
But, here’s the deal, not every teen needs a tutor!
Despite what your child’s teacher may tell you, your teen may not need to have a private tutor.
So how do you know if your teen really does need a tutor?
Here is how to tell if YOUR teen needs a tutor.
how to tell if your teen needs a tutor
There is really a simple way to tell whether or not your teen may need a tutor.
If your teen is doing very well in MOST of their classes, but struggles to do well in ONE class, then they might need a tutor for that one class.
For example, lets say a student does really well, and gets A’s and B’s in nearly all of their classes. But, one year this teen takes advanced Calculus and is struggling to get a C. This is an instance where this teen may need a Calculus tutor.
However, if a teen is struggling to do well in most of their classes, and has very few passing grades, then this is a sign of a greater academic problem
How to tell if your teen does NOT need a tutor
If your teen is barely scrapping by with C’s or D’s in most of their classes, then this is a sign that there is a bigger problem.
Your teen does NOT need a tutor. Your teen will need a different kind of help that a private tutor won’t provide.
The real issue is that your teen does not have the right skills for academic success.
If your teen does not have the right skills for academic success, then it doesn’t matter how hard they work, they will not have the skills to do well in school.
So hiring a tutor to tutor Calculus won’t help because the bigger problem is lack of academic skills. So, even if you hire a tutor, once the tutor no longer works with your child anymore, the grades will go right back down to failing.
The BEST thing you can do for your teen is to teach them the right skills they need to do better in school.
Skills like:
Study skills
Test Taking skills
Time Management
Note Taking
Organization
Etc.
