For years, I always tutored because I loved helping students with learning and with earning better grades. But now, as a parent myself, I have realized the truth behind the reason why parents hire tutors.
The real reason that parents hire tutors for their teens is to end the conflict!!
You see, despite your best efforts as a parent to help your child, to encourage them to do well in school, your efforts are met with an eye roll, usually followed by lack of any action towards school work.
So instead of a parent asking again and again for their teen to study, do homework, or towards anything productive, they can simply hire a tutor for someone else to deal with it!
As an example, if I hate cleaning my house, and can pay a house cleaner to do it, wouldn’t I??
So why then can’t we hire a tutor for our kids if we hate the constant schoolwork conflicts?
This is genius! And it has taken for me to become a parent first for me to fully understand it! :D
If your teen is giving you a hard time with school, and ignoring you despite your best efforts of encouragement, please know that your kid really is a great kid!
One student I worked with had a big project that he had to start on. After speaking with his mother, she told him he had to “take step one, then step two, then step three.”
Her recommendation was met with an eye roll and a shrug. He told her that was NOT the right way to do it.
After sitting down and working with the teen, I told him he had to “take step one, then step two, then step three.” (the EXACT same thing his mother said.)
His response: “Oh wow. That sounds like a great plan. I’ll do that!”
After I spoke with mom about what he needed to do for his next steps, she told me that that was EXACTLY what she had already told him to do!
Why don’t teens listen to their parents?
I’m not quit sure why, but I know that every teen does it. Which is why so many parents hire me to tell their teens to do exactly what their mother already told them to do.
So if you are tired of the constant homework battles, the eye rolls, and being ignored, just know that you do NOT have to manage that conflict any more! You can hire a tutor and outsource that conflict off of your plate!
But the best part?
Hiring a tutor can take away the stress and conflict that school often provides and can leave an opportunity for you and your child to have a better, less conflicting relationship. And having a more peaceful relationship with your child is always the main goal! <3
